I decided I would go back to the marshmallow fondant for now, until I get the necessary ingredients to make real fondant. But I decided, I might want to take a shot at making a pirate cake this time. There isn't really a lot to the cake, as you can see, but I don't really have a lot of decorating equipment at this point in time, so I just did what I could with what I had. The pirate was actually a little easier than I had imagined, and quite fun to make. He is just made of fondant. Eventually I will try decorating some rice treats or something for figures, but for now, fondant will do fine. I decided that I would try a buttercream fondant recipe, since I wasn't all that thrilled with the taste or texture of marshmallow fondant. In all honesty, it was a big mistake. It was impossible to work with. I had to make all the designs in my hands, because unless you kept the fondant warm, it cracked. It was almost impossible to get the cake covered, and very frustrating. With that said, it tasted good, and had a much better texture than the marshmallow fondant. I just need to keep looking for new fondant recipes. As you will be able to see, we have different approaches to making cake, to say the least. He is more of an artist than I am, and I am more of a perfectionist. I think that once we really start getting into cake making, I will do the more technical things, and he will probably stick to sculpting and things like that. I have been wanting to get into cake decorating for a while now, and thought now was the perfect time to do it. I have a daughter who turns one in September and I want to be able to make her a pirate ship cake. So, I have to start practicing now.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yesterday,  I tried using fondant for the first time. It was actually much easier than I thought that it would be. I used a marshmallow fondant recipe, since I have heard that regular fondant doesn't taste all that great on it's own. I have never actually eaten fondant, but I took people's word for it. I thought that the fondant did taste alright; though, I wasn't exactly sold on the texture. It was a little too hard and, well, marshmallowey for my taste. I always imagined fondant being softer and more dough like. I think I will have to try modifying the recipe, or just find a new one. As for the cake, it went fairly well, I just made some polka dots and a bow. I have limited supplies, so my first cakes aren't going to be that adventurous. All I currently have is red, black, and green coloring, a pizza cutter, and a shot glass to make polka dots with. Not too exciting. As time goes one, I'm sure I will either get more supplies or at least more creative.
